We were instantly hooked to the otherworldly sounds of Seattle hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction’s debut album, awE naturalE; it was a heady blend of rap, soul, R&B and spaced-out sounds alien to our Earthly ears. Unfortunately, the duo would split up after releasing one more album. But like any break-up, there’s always the promise of new material from different projects, and that’s what we have here with SassyBlack, the new project from Catherine Harris-White. Her solo album, New Black Swing, still has hints of the trippier moments of her former band, yet it delves deep into the sound of 90s R&B/pop, and guess what? It’s excellent. Each song is killer, but I’ve become quite attached to “Satisfied,” a mellow love song that’s all about the groove. I think you’ll enjoy it, too.
