In the early 1990s, cult band Big Star experienced a bit of a revival, with the reissue of their lost classic Third/Sister Lovers, a live album, an album of unreleased material by founder Chris Bell, and a successful reunion tour. Frontman Alex Chilton was back in the spotlight, and decided to capitalize on it by making a comeback record. Thus was born A Man Called Destruction, released in 1995, and soon to be reissued in remastered and expanded form by Omnivore Recordings, who are to be commended for doing a fine, fine job of keeping the archive and the legend alive. One of the highlights of that delightful, raw, raucous soul record was “Lies,” a fine song on record, but this performance, taken from the Conan O’Brien show, sends the song to a whole ‘nother level of awesome.
A Man Called Destruction will be released 25 August via Omnivore Recordings.
