What better way to kick off the hot summer weekend than with some cool R&B from the 70s? Shalamar was borne out of the success of soul train, when dancers Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley were put together to form a musical group, along with a third member position that seemingly revolved on a constant basis throughout their career. As part of their continuing three albums on two CDs series, Robinsongs‘ latest offering brings together the first three Shalamar records: 1977’s Uptown Festival, 1978’s Disco Gardens, and 1979’s Big Fun. While all three albums are quite fantastic and enjoyable, it is their first major hit, “The Second Time Around,” that truly stands out as a great song from the era. There’s a very good reason why this song lives on in radio station and disco night playlists–simply is a classic pop number.
