In one of the more surprising announcements in its three decades long career, venerable independent label Sub Pop recently declared that they had signed one of New Orleans’s longest-running groups, Preservation Hall Jazz Band. While their new material is not slated for release until 2019, the label recently digitally re-issued their two previous albums, 2017’s So It Is and 2013’s That’s It!, both of which have a unique distinction of being the first two albums of all original material in the band’s 50+ years of recording. “One Hundred Fires” is an excellent tune, a funeral march that turns into a joyous celebration of music. Interestingly enough, the song was cowritten with Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson. Here’s to a unique new relationship, one that we are positive will produce some fantastic music.
