Song Of The Day: Rustin Man, “Martian Garden”

Last week the world mourned the loss of Talk Talk frontman Mark Hollis, and rightly so; Hollis was a unique musical visionary. But to say the vision was all him is unfair, as his bandmates were equally talented and just as much a part of the combination as he was. To wit: Paul Webb–AKA Rustin Man–has just released his first solo album proper, and it’s absolutely clear just how integral he was to talk talk’s sound. Drift Code is an atmospheric record with a more earthen folk tone, but it is still a unique sound all its own. I’m particularly fond of “Martian Garden,” which sounds quite alien even as it sounds quite natural. It is a wholly unique form of psychedelia that I quite like.
