Song Of The Day: Pixies, “On Graveyard Hill”

Okay, here’s the thing: I grew up on the music of Pixies, saw them numerous times, and loved them during their prime. Their reunion albums? Honestly, they haven’t moved me. Considering the missing Kim Deal, at times they felt like glorified Frank Black & The Catholics records. Not a bad thing, that–but they just didn’t sound very Pixies-like. But then, this. It’s easily one of their finest reunion songs–it’s got the old spark, and yet it doesn’t sound like they’re treading water or simply regurgitating their distinctive and influential style. So maybe the third time’s the charm–perhaps their new album, Beneath the Eyrie, will be the return to form we’re hoping it will be. Until then, we’ll happily enjoy this new song.
