Roxette lead singer Marie Fredriksson passed away Monday following an extended battle with brain cancer. The Swedish duo of Fredriksson and Per Gessle came to prominence with their second album, 1988’s Look Sharp!, followed by 1991’s worldwide smash Joyride. Although American success quickly waned, they maintained their success elsewhere, releasing new material as recently as 2016.
Unsurprisingly, the band garnered comparison to ABBA, though they didn’t really possess the same comparable qualities as contemporaries Ace of Base. Yet they could channel the Swedish band’s spirit, such as on superb b-side “The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye”. We first heard the melancholic number as the flipside of their hit single, “Spending My Time,” and at the time felt it deserved better than that. A melancholic ballad with a bit of a beat, we’re reminded of Agnetha and Frida and their late period work, especially The Visitors.
A powerful voice silenced way too soon, Marie Fredriksson was 61 years old.
