Song Of The Day: Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, “High As Apple Pie–Slice II”

Charles Wright

Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band not only earned their place in Soul history thanks to their hit 1970 hit “Express Yourself,” but they earned a place in rap history. DJ’s and Mixmasters have sampled “Express Yourself” so much, it is now a standard. Most notably, N.W.A. used the track as the basis for their song of the same name.  Real Gone Music reissued 1970’s album Express Yourself today, making it a perfect time to revisit the album’s epic highlight. “High As Apple Pie, Slice II” is slow-burning, offering nearly eighteen minutes of pure Soul crescendo. Feeling dizzy yet fulfilled at the end of it? Mission accomplished. This amazing track is easily worth the price of admission, and the fresh remaster gives it an even cleaner sound. Here’s hoping Kanye has a copy…
