Song Of The Day: Paul Young & The Royal Family, “Every Time You Go Away”

Paul Young

In 1985, Paul Young was riding high with the success of his second album The Secret of Association, thanks in part to the fantastic single “Every Time You Go Away.” Though Young  is a fine songwriter, Daryl Hall wrote this number. Young’s version possesses an endearing and enduring hook; its exotic sound is a little poppy, a little soulful, a little jazzy, and accentuated with an Eastern flavor. It’s a distinctive melody that’s instantly recognizable and one that still sounds fresh.  As part of his promotional campaign, he appeared in concert on German television program Rockpalast. A new collection compiles both the audio and the video of that performance.

It’s a fine set, recorded the week his groundbreaking album came out. This performance of that beloved hit highlights his powerful voice. The rest of the set is equally as fine, and highlights most of his then-new album. Paul Young & The Royal Family: Live At Rockpalast shows that Young’s talents as a live performer, offering a truly real performance during a decade of facade.
