Song Of The Day: Malo, “Suavecito”

Malo

It saddened us to learn that guitarist Jorge Santana, the younger brother of Carlos, passed away on Thursday. Although his musical journey may have been relatively low-key in comparison to his brother’s, his guitar playing rivaled his older sibling. More importantly, Jorge’s work with Malo stands as some of the finest Latin Rock of the early 1970s. Malo released a bona fide classic with their debut single, “Suavecito,” which took them to the upper reaches of the charts upon release in 1972. Though Malo’s existence proved tumultuous and Jorge’s involvement brief, the song lives on. It lived on in the Santana setlist, with the two brothers performing it as late as last November.  Furthermore, the number became the basis for Sugar Ray’s hit “Every Morning,” a song we unashamedly love. Santana, an underrated but beloved guitarist, dead at 68. RIP.
