Song Of The Week: Green Day, “Christie Road”

It was the pop-punk shot heard round the world. Green Day’s third album Dookie was a game-changer for music, shooing out the darkness and dankness of Grunge and bringing listeners something brighter, snottier, and joyous in its eternal-youthfulness. In the inevitable anniversary box set, a highlight. The label persuaded the band to revisit some early tracks for their major-label debut, and one such song was “Christie Road.” It’s a mid tempo ballad (all things considered for Green Day) that focuses on youthful boredom and ennui. It also sounds like it would have been a hit had it been released. Ah well, can’t be too picky; Dookie is filled to the brim with potential and very real hits, and “Christie Road” may have gotten away, but in this set, it’s a clear highlight.
