3AM Eternal: Tom Troccoli’s Dog “Girl From The North Country” (1985)

A curious moment, this. Tom Troccoli was a roadie for Black Flag, and member of Nig Heist and October Faction, all loud, noisy rock. Tom Troccoli’s sole album as Tom Troccoli’s Dog, however, was something completely different. The self-titled debut, released in 1985, was raw and rough, and yet oddly mellow and delicate, recalling the vibe of Neil Young associates Crazy Horse. One of the highlights of the album, though, is this cover of a Bob Dylan classic, featuring guest vocals by one “Chuy Modelo,” who was, in fact X frontman John Doe. Other songs on the album feature other members of Black Flag and sundry SST artists, and the whole affair seems oddly ahead of its time.
