We must happily admit that we have been quite charmed by Laughing Matter, the latest offering from Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock band Wand. “Rock” is a quite relative term, though; we find that while there are moments of rocking-outness, it’s on the mellower moments that the band really shines. Take, for instance, the Zombies covering “All Apologies”-like dreamy freak-out of “xoxo,” wherein vocalist Cory Hanson croons softly over a gentle synth melody that seemingly and paradoxically becomes more frenetic as it becomes more unhurried. The rest of the album ebbs and flows in such a lackadaisical manner, but we don’t mind a bit….
