This one is a bit of a grower. Truthfully, on first listen, I didn’t care for it. Yet I felt compelled to return to it a few hours later, and boy, am I glad I did. Velvet Negroni is the new project by Jeremy Nutzman, whose musical output has been on the more abstract end of experimental and noise rock. But this? This is a pure soul moment, one that is actually quite in line with the history of his new record label, 4AD. The song begins with a saxophone that sounds like the work of Dif Juz’s Richie Thomas, the swirling melodies are reminiscent of A.R. Kane, while his gorgeous falsetto recalls TV On The Radio‘s Tunde Adebimpe. “CONFETTI” is a heady and intoxicatingly mellow groove, and this initial taste of forthcoming debut album NEON BROWN has certainly piqued our curiosity.
